Day Two Parallel Workshops

            “Improving teacher competency”

“Māori digital flipbook: Ako, Aro and Whanaungatanga”
                              Dr Mei Winitana
Kaiwhakahaere Māori for He Taunga Waka
He uri ia nō Ngāti Ruapani ki Waikaremoana, Ngāi Tūhoe, me Taranaki whānui. Mei brings
extensive experience from the schooling and tertiary sectors. Her doctoral research provided
insights into Māori women’s identity at home here in Aotearoa and in Australia. Her reflections
about the place of te reo Māori have helped shaped her ideas around the place of literacy and
numeracy for Māori in contemporary tertiary contexts, and especially around the current cultural
competencies debate. Charged with completing an online resource like a digital flipbook was not
without challenges, but as a team it was realised in 2016. A prototype of the flipbook was utilised
as a teaching/learning tool that was rolled out in the 2017 series of Māori workshops delivered by
the He Taunga Waka workshop facilitators.

This presentation was supported by other members of the He Taunga Waka team of Māori facilitators including
